About the grape

Syrah, originally from France's Rhône Valley, was introduced to Tuscany in the early 20th century by the Count of Montecarlo di Lucca after a trip to France. In the 1960s, wineries in Cortona discovered Syrah vines in their vineyards and began cultivating them. Research in the 1970s, led by Professor Attilio Scienza and the University of Milan, found that Cortona's climate and soil closely resembled those of the Rhône Valley, making it ideal for Syrah cultivation. This led to the establishment of the Cortona DOC in 1999, with Syrah now accounting for about 80% of its production.

Baldetti is a family-owned winery located in Cortona, Tuscany, Italy, with a rich history deeply rooted in the region's viticultural traditions. In the late 1960s, Mario Baldetti revitalized the existing vineyards, leading to the production of bottled wines following the establishment of the 'Bianco Vergine della Valdichiana' DOC in the early 1970s. With the introduction of the Cortona DOC in 2000, the winery focused on cultivating Syrah, which has become the area's signature grape variety. In 2012, Alfonso Baldetti and his sons, Daniele and Gian Luca, inaugurated a new winery facility in Pietraia, enhancing their production capabilities. The winery is renowned for its commitment to quality and passion, producing wines that reflect the unique terroir of Cortona.
