Ca Marcanda was created by Angelo Gaja in 1996 when he acquired vineyards near Bolgheri after lengthy negotiations, the name refers to those protracted talks. The estate brought Gaja family expertise from Piedmont to the Tuscan coast, focusing on Bordeaux varieties that suit Bolgheris maritime climate. The cellar building was designed to blend into the landscape, with much of it set into the earth and local stone used in construction. Over the following decades Ca Marcanda established flagship wines such as Camarcanda and Magari, while remaining part of the Gaja group managed by the next generation of the family.
