Viña Montes was founded in 1988 by Aurelio Montes and Douglas Murray with two additional partners joining shortly after, aiming to produce premium Chilean wines. The winery pioneered planting vineyards on the steep hillsides of Apalta and introduced varieties such as Syrah early in Chile, which led to iconic wines like Montes Alpha M, Montes Folly and Purple Angel. Montes built a distinctive gravity flow winery and a botanical estate in Parcela 15 Millahue de Apalta, and it developed notable sustainability and social programs. Over the decades Montes expanded into multiple Chilean regions and into Argentina, while maintaining a reputation for innovation and high quality vineyards and wines.
