Antico Monastero Barbaresco (2022)
SommeliAI Insights
Barbaresco Nebbiolo with dried cherry, rose, orange zest, and silky but firm tannins.
About this wine
Antico Monastero Barbaresco 2022 is a 100 percent Nebbiolo from the Barbaresco DOCG in Piedmont. It shows a bright garnet color and classic aromas of red cherry and plum, with floral notes that lean toward rose and potpourri, plus hints of licorice, tar, and orange zest. On the palate it is medium bodied, with fresh acidity, a velvety feel, and ripe, fine grained tannins that tighten slightly on the finish. Bosio reports fermentation in stainless steel with about 10 days of skin contact, followed by 24 months in oak barrels and another 6 months in bottle before release. The fruit sources are in the Neive and Barbaresco areas, where clay rich calcareous soils and moderate elevations help build structure and perfume. This is a detailed, traditional feeling Barbaresco with lift and precision, and it should gain more savory complexity with a few years of bottle age.
About the grape
Nebbiolo is Piedmont’s signature red grape, with written references going back to the 1200s, and its name is often linked to the autumn fog, nebbia, that arrives around harvest in the Langhe. It is a demanding, late ripening variety that growers usually place on the best south facing hillside sites, and it is commonly trained on Guyot to manage vigor and help it reach full maturity. In the 2022 Agricola Bosio Antico Monastero Barbaresco, it is bottled as 100 percent Nebbiolo from the Barbaresco and Neive area, grown around 200 to 300 meters on clay and limestone rich soils that suit the grape’s need for structure and drainage. The grape is fermented after a short maceration and then aged about 24 months in oak, a traditional Barbaresco approach that is chosen to shape Nebbiolo’s naturally firm grape tannins before bottling.

Producer
Agricola Bosio, trading as Bosio and Bosio Family Estates, began in 1967 when Egidio Bosio and his wife Angela started making wine in Santo Stefano Belbo in Piedmont. After Egidio, the winery was developed by their son Valter, who expanded vineyard holdings in the 1980s across nearby Langhe and Monferrato hills and invested in modern cellar equipment. The estate operates in a UNESCO recognized wine landscape and works with a long standing network of more than 150 local growers alongside its own vineyards. In recent years Luca Bosio, an oenology graduate, joined the family leadership, strengthening both winemaking oversight and international market focus. The company is known for a broad Piedmont range, spanning classic appellations such as Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera and Moscato d Asti.
