SommeliAI Insights

Delord 25 years Bas Armagnac from Maison Delord, bright candied citrus, warm baking spice and long toasted oak notes.

About this wine

This is a 25 year old Bas Armagnac blended from Ugni Blanc, Colombard, Folle Blanche and Baco, distilled in the Delord house and aged in French oak for more than two decades. On the nose it shows patisserie like notes of candied orange peel, vanilla and allspice, with secondary impressions of dried fruit and toasted nuts. The palate is round and focused, offering caramel, cocoa and coffee notes framed by bright citrus and a hint of ginger. Texture is silky with gentle tannic grip from the oak, and the finish is long, showing walnut, raisin and a lingering spiced dryness. The bottling is typically presented at 40 percent ABV and reflects Delord's use of traditional Armagnac distillation and extended barrel aging for complexity and rancio development.

About the grape

Ugni Blanc is the backbone of this Bas Armagnac, a late ripening variety prized for high acidity and low alcohol that makes clean, reliable distillation base wine, and at Delord it supplies the structural backbone of the blend. Baco 22A is a French American hybrid created by François Baco after phylloxera, it thrives on the sandy boulbènes soils of Bas Armagnac and contributes roundness and fruit driven power that benefits long ageing in Gascon and Limousin oak. Colombard is an older Gascony grape often picked early for freshness, it brings lively, spicy fruit notes in small proportion, while Folle Blanche is the historic Armagnac grape, rare and fragile, used sparingly here for floral lift and finesse in the 25 year bottling.

Quick facts

  • 🕰️ Maison Delord keeps a special cellar called Paradise where some casks date back to 1900, so you are sipping a spirit matured beside century old stocks
  • 🕯️ Each bottle of the 25 years is filled and sealed by hand with wax at the estate, giving every bottle a small artisan finish
  • 🛠️ Delord stills are tiny and slow, producing only about 30 liters an hour which helps preserve delicate grape character from their four varietals
  • 🧑‍🌾 The estate still farms and uses all four traditional Armagnac grapes, Ugni blanc, Baco, Colombard and Folle Blanche, and practices organic viticulture
  • 🐄 Local lore at the distillery remembers Prosper Delord arriving with a travelling pot still pulled by two cows, a story you can feel in the old world charm of the bottle

Producer

Maison Delord was founded in 1893 by Prosper Delord, an itinerant distiller who settled in the village of Lannepax and established a family distillery. The house has remained family run for four generations, today led by brothers Jérôme and Sylvain Delord who oversee estate farming, distillation and ageing. The domaine controls about 66 hectares in the heart of Bas Armagnac and works with the four traditional grape varieties used for Armagnac production. Their cellars hold over a thousand oak casks and a selection of very old eaux de vie kept in a room called Paradise, and bottles are still hand sealed with wax as a mark of artisanal care.
