Prosecco Superiore (2024)
SommeliAI Insights
Il Morgante Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore, bright and crisp with white apple and floral lift and persistent, fine bubbles.
About this wine
Fresh aromas of green apple, pear and white flowers open the glass, followed by citrus peel and a hint of almond on the finish. The palate is crisp and lively, with fine persistent bubbles, medium body and a clean, slightly creamy texture that frames the fruit. Acidity is bright enough to keep the wine focused while a touch of residual sugar softens the edges and adds roundness. This wine is made from 100 percent Glera grapes grown in the Conegliano Valdobbiadene DOCG and it undergoes secondary fermentation in a pressurized tank using the Martinotti or Charmat method to preserve primary fruit aromatics. Alcohol is typically around 11 to 11.5 percent and the wine showcases the classic Prosecco Superiore profile of orchard fruit, citrus and floral notes with a mineral undertone from the hillside vineyards.
About the grape
Glera, historically known as Prosecco before the EU officially registered the variety as Glera in 2009, is the single grape behind this Conegliano Valdobbiadene bottling and has roots in the border area between Italy and Slovenia. The variety is prized for sparkling wine production and is grown on the steep, mineral rich slopes between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene where vines are often trained and tended to suit terraced, high density plantings and harvest is largely by hand due to slope steepness. In this wine Glera is managed to retain freshness and aromatic lift, with the regional DOCG rules and producers favoring Charmat style sparkling vinification and increasingly experimenting with vineyard level selection and riva sites to express differences in soil and exposure. The Conegliano Valdobbiadene hills were recognized as a distinct terroir and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019, highlighting the long standing human shaping of these Glera vineyards and the historical importance of the grape to the area.

Palate profile
Producer
Morgante is a family owned winery in Grotte, Sicily that began making estate wines in 1994 when Antonio Morgante and his sons decided to vinify their own grapes. The family had cultivated Nero d'Avola for generations and planted vineyards at higher elevations between 350 and 550 meters to gain freshness and complexity. In the late 1990s the estate began working with noted winemaker Riccardo Cotarella to refine their style and elevate their flagship Nero d'Avola bottlings. Today Morgante is known for large scale estate production that emphasizes indigenous grapes, old vines, and a focus on quality across wines and olive oil products.
