Orin Swift Cellars was founded in 1998 by winemaker Dave Phinney, who named the winery after his father's middle name, Orin, and his mother's maiden name, Swift. Phinney's journey into winemaking began during a semester abroad in Florence, Italy, where he developed a passion for wine. After working at Robert Mondavi Winery, he established Orin Swift, gaining acclaim for innovative blends and distinctive labels. In 2016, the winery was acquired by E. & J. Gallo Winery, with Phinney continuing to provide creative and winemaking direction.
